The formula

Worked example

Frequently asked questions
How much extra material should I buy?
Add 5-10% over the calculated area for cuts and waste — 10-15% for diagonal tile patterns.
What about an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, add both as separate rooms, and the total is your area.
Is a square foot the same everywhere?
Yes — 1 sq ft = 144 sq in = 0.092903 sq m by definition.
