About this image compressor

Large photos are rejected by email systems, web forms and messaging apps โ€” and slow to send on mobile data. This compressor re-encodes your image as a JPEG at the size and quality you choose, showing the before/after file sizes so you can find the sweet spot. Everything happens in your browser: the image never leaves your device, which also means it works offline and costs nothing to run.

How to use it

  1. Choose an image from your device.
  2. Pick a maximum size and move the quality slider (75-85% is a good balance).
  3. Compare the sizes shown, then download the compressed image.

Worked example

A 4 MB phone photo resized to 1280 px at 80% quality typically comes down to about 300-500 KB โ€” roughly 90% smaller โ€” while still looking sharp on screens.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to your server?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. You can verify this by loading the page and switching to airplane mode โ€” it still works.

What quality setting should I use?

80% is a good default: much smaller files with no visible difference on screens. Use 60-70% when a form has a strict size limit, and 90%+ when the image will be printed or edited further.

What happens to PNG images with transparency?

The output is JPEG, which has no transparency โ€” transparent areas are filled with white. For photos this makes no difference.

Why resize as well as compress?

Most file size comes from pixel dimensions. A 4000 px photo viewed on a phone screen gains nothing over 1280 px, so resizing usually saves far more than quality reduction alone.
