About this gpa calculator

Your GPA is a credit-weighted average: an A in a 4-credit course moves it more than an A in a 1-credit lab. Add each course with its grade and credits and this calculator does the weighting for you.

How to use it

  1. Set the grade and credits for each course.
  2. Add or remove rows as needed.
  3. Read your GPA on the 4.0 scale.

The formula

GPA = ฮฃ (grade points ร— credits) / ฮฃ credits

Worked example

An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course: (4ร—3 + 3ร—4) / 7 = 24/7 = 3.43.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GPA?

3.0 is a solid B average; 3.5+ is strong; 3.7+ is typically honours territory. Requirements vary by school and purpose.

Do all schools use this scale?

Most US schools use the 4.0 scale shown here. Some weight honours/AP courses above 4.0 โ€” this calculator uses the standard unweighted scale.

Does an F hurt if the course has few credits?

Less than in a heavy course โ€” that is exactly what the credit weighting does.
