Reading a CMYK build

Each swatch shows the percentage of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (Key) ink. The preview is computed from the CMYK values, so what you see is the standard screen approximation of the printed colour.

Two builds deserve care: Rich Black (60/40/40/100) gives deep, solid blacks for large areas and photos, while plain 100K is better for small text because it cannot mis-register. Avoid total ink above roughly 300% โ€” it dries slowly and can mark the sheet above it.

Frequently asked questions

What is rich black?

A black built from all four inks โ€” commonly 60C 40M 40Y 100K. It looks deeper than 100K alone on large areas, but should never be used for body text.

Why does my printed colour look darker than the screen?

Screens are backlit; paper is not. Colours almost always print a little darker and less vivid than they look on a monitor โ€” proofing is the only reliable check.

Can I use these builds commercially?

Yes. These are standard process-colour mixes, free to use in any design or print job.
