Frequently asked questions

Why does it stop at 3999?

Standard Roman numerals have no symbol above M used more than three times (MMMCMXCIX = 3999). Larger numbers historically used a bar over a numeral to multiply by 1000.

Is IIII ever correct?

On clock faces, yes โ€” IIII is traditional there. Standard notation uses IV for 4, which is what this converter produces.

What is the year 2024 in Roman numerals?

MMXXIV.
